How to Buy the Right Car for You

Knowing how to buy the right car for you may seem straightforward in your mind, but we’ve got some pointers for you to make sure that you are thinking about all the important aspects before parting with your hard-earned cash!

Set a Budget

This should be the number one thing on your mind when it is time for you to car shop! What is your budget and how are you going to purchase the car? Are you financing it, buying outright, or taking a loan? There are many options so be sure to evaluate each one and choose the option appropriate for your financial situation and budget.

Set a budget and stick to it. It can be easy to lose sight of your budget once you are actually in front of so many impressive vehicles at a dealership. We become like a kid in a candy shop, with all the powerful engines, shiny colours, fancy gadgets and more! It can be difficult to remember what you are really there to look for and what budget you have to spend.

Take your time and look around. It can be easy to turn up to one seller and just feel like you have to go for that car because you have enquired about it. But, if you are not completely satisfied with it then do not feel pressured to buy a car. There are other sellers out there. When you are spending thousands of pounds you need to make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons and that you are happy with your choice

Do Your Research On Some Vehicles

You may have a particular make and model that you are looking for but bear in mind that things may be different once you actually view the car in person and test drive it. If it is a different make to what you currently have or have owned previously then consider test-driving one before setting your heart on it.

Different makes and models have different driving styles, pedals, gearsticks, steering wheels and more, all of which could contribute to you not actually liking the feel of the driving experience.

You may also find that various models from the same make of manufacturer can vary in price based on their popularity. So, if you have chosen a particular make because you like the brand, style, and manufacturing, consider looking at different models within that make to find yourself a perfect model match for your budget.

What is its History?

Are you buying new or used? If you are buying nearly new or used be sure to run checks on the history of the vehicle. Be sure to use the GOV.UK website to check the registration plate. This can give you details of the MOT history and whether it has passed or failed in recent years.

By checking the MOT and service history you can see if there are any outstanding issues that might end up leaving you with a hefty bill to pay. Ideally, the dealership should have documents for any work done on the car and a logbook for the service history. If they do not have the vehicle’s history then request that they run a full MOT and service on the vehicle for you if you are wanting to purchase it.

Is the Seller Trustworthy?

Dodgy dealers! These are definitely something you want to avoid. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect and there are people out there who will be looking to scam you out of your money. When it comes to being scammed by a dodgy dealer this could be devastating for you financially.

Most dealerships across the UK are eligible to be approved dealerships by companies such as AA or RAC. For example, if a dealership is an AA-approved dealer, your purchase will generally have a good warranty and coverage following your purchase, so if anything goes wrong you can get it fixed without any expense to you.

If you are buying through a private seller, checking the history is even more important as you will not be covered by a warranty.

Check reviews! If a dealership seems questionable you can always check the reviews. Whether they are Google reviews, Trustpilot, or social media. Have a read through both the positive and negative reviews so that you have a good idea of the service and quality that the company provides.

Have you done a test drive?

Test driving a car is probably the most important thing you can do when you are looking to buy. Firstly, you need to drive it to find out if it is comfortable if you like how it feels to drive, plus it could possibly alert you to any issues with the car.

We would advise test-driving multiple cars for sale as you may find that you like the feel of a make or model that you had not previously considered.

Buy a Car You Love

Finally, this may seem like an obvious point, but make sure you choose something that you will love! You may decide to keep the car for years to come, so choosing with your heart as well as your head will help you buy the right car for you.
