The BMW 3 Series is a long-standing line of cars in from the innovative motoring genius of BMW. In 2020 the 3 series was the most sold BMW model in the UK. The popularity and reputation of BMW speaks for itself, it would be difficult to go outside and not see one on the roads.
So what makes the BMW 3 Series so special? AutoCoinCars is going to do a BMW 3 Series history review along with having a look at some of the amazing BMW cars we have for sale.
Firstly, did you know that there are 7 generations of the BMW 3 Series ranging from 1975 to the present? Add on top of that the M3 version as well and you have a span of 8 variants within the lifespan of the 3 Series.
Starting from the beginning, the first-generation E21 was in production from 1975 to 1983. This is where the characteristic front grill originates from that you all know and love on the cars today.
Moving onto the second-generation car gave birth to the classic double headlight set up at the front of the vehicle, this is a feature that has since been since in every BMW car and is part of its signature look. This E30 was in production from 1982 to 1994.
The third-generation E36 was in production from 1990 to 2000, this generation BMW was the first of the 3 Series to have a new focus of driver comfort and safety above the performance of the car. This is something that has influenced the manufacturing and design of these cars for future generations as well as other models in the BMW range.
The fourth-generation E46, produced from 1998 to 2007, brought a much more modern design in for its time, it had a sporty look and feel as well as having the choice of being a hatchback, saloon, coupe or convertible model. Another great manufacturing evolution for the E46 is the improvement in fuel efficiency which improved by 10% from the E36!
Once you get to the fifth generation you’re reaching a level of familiarity that we see in the current production line. The E90 was in production from 2005 to 2013 so you may even find some of these still circulating the used car market.
The sixth-generation 3 Series BMW F30 made history within BMW as one of the first vehicles manufactured that had the option of a hybrid engine. Not only that, but this generation was also the first to introduce turbocharged engines! With the F30 being produced from 2011 to 2019, this makes this the model that you will most regularly see on the roads and in the used car market currently.
Finally, we have arrived at the present day which gives us the seventh-generation G20/G21 BMW which was unveiled in 2019. This generation is available with an electric, hybrid, or petrol engine giving motorists the option to be more environmentally friendly whilst maintaining all the style and wow-factor of this new model.
